Electro-Acupuncture

Electro-acupuncture combines the precision of traditional needle placement with gentle, scientifically calibrated electrical stimulation — producing stronger, faster, and more sustained therapeutic effects for chronic pain, nerve conditions, and musculoskeletal injuries.

What Is Electro-Acupuncture?

Electro-acupuncture is an enhanced form of traditional needle therapy in which small electrodes are clipped to inserted needles and a mild electrical current is delivered between them. The current replicates and amplifies the bioelectric signals that acupuncture points naturally modulate — producing a more intense stimulation of the target tissue, nerve, or meridian pathway.

The technique was developed in the mid-twentieth century and is now one of the most widely studied forms of acupuncture, with a substantial research base supporting its use in chronic pain management, neurological rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal conditions. For conditions where traditional needling produces results that are good but not complete, electro-acupuncture is often the difference that breaks through.

The Mechanism: Why Electrical Stimulation Matters

At the cellular level, electro-acupuncture triggers more pronounced release of endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins — the body's endogenous opioid system. Different frequencies of electrical stimulation activate different receptor types: low frequencies (2–4 Hz) preferentially release endorphins, while high frequencies (80–100 Hz) activate dynorphin receptors. Dr. Bezemer selects the frequency that best matches your condition.

Electrically stimulated needles also produce greater anti-inflammatory effects than manual needling, stimulate nerve conduction more strongly — which is particularly valuable in neuropathic conditions — and produce sustained local muscle relaxation that is difficult to achieve through other means.

What Does It Feel Like?

Most patients experience a gentle, rhythmic tingling or pulsing sensation in the area being treated. This is typically not uncomfortable — many patients find it oddly satisfying, like a deep vibration that progressively relaxes the tissue around each needle. The intensity is always adjusted to your tolerance. If anything feels uncomfortable at any point, Dr. Bezemer will immediately adjust the settings.

Is Electro-Acupuncture Right for Me?

Electro-acupuncture is particularly indicated for patients who have not responded fully to traditional needling alone, for chronic conditions requiring stronger stimulation, and for neurological conditions where nerve regeneration is a goal. It is safe for most patients, though there are some contraindications: it is not used near pacemakers, during pregnancy, or in areas of active infection. Dr. Bezemer will determine its appropriateness during your initial intake.

ELECTROSTIMULATOR
Why It Works

The benefits of Electro-Acupuncture

Faster Results

Electrical stimulation produces more rapid therapeutic effects — particularly for chronic pain that has been slow to respond.

Stronger Analgesia

Enhanced endorphin release means more powerful and longer-lasting pain relief than traditional needling alone.

Nerve Regeneration

Stimulates nerve conduction and promotes the regrowth of damaged nerve tissue over time.

Muscle Relaxation

Produces sustained release of deep muscular tension that is difficult to achieve through other modalities.
